Restoring Lost Facial Volume with Dermal Fillers
Aging in the face starts as early as the late 30’s, when tissue volume begins to be lost from beneath the skin. Aging in most of the face proceeds gradually, but volume loss from under the cheeks seems to occur quite suddenly in many people. In response to stress, trauma, or yo-yo dieting, people can suddenly lose up to 35 percent of the mid-face volume in one year. Loss of volume then allows the skin to gradually sag and slip, forming jowls, hollows, creases, and wrinkles.
Once the skin has sagged severely, only a surgical facelift can restore a more youthful appearance. However, it takes about a decade after volume loss for severe skin sagging to occur, and if the volume is restored through injectables, a more youthful appearance can be immediately restored. In addition, restoring facial volume with injectables can delay or prevent skin sagging and slipping.
Dermal fillers are agents that are injected under the skin in a minimally invasive procedure to restore volume to the face. There are different dermal fillers in current use. At The Colton Center, we offer Restylane® and Radiesse® to our patients.
Radiesse® is composed of microspheres of calcium suspended in a water-based gel. All of the materials in this filler are naturally found in the human body, so there is little risk of adverse reactions. Radiesse® is injected under the skin to plump and restore volume. It stimulates the body to produce more collagen at the site of injection to restore volume with natural results. The injected material is slowly broken down and removed by the body. Radiesse® is most commonly used to fill in creases and restore volume under the nose, around the mouth, and in the cheek/jowl area.
Restylane® is made out of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in human skin and joints. Hyaluronic acid forms a viscous gel when mixed with water. Restylane® can be used in different parts of the face, such as the lips, the brow area, around the mouth, or in the cheeks/jowl area.
What to Expect
The injection procedure may be uncomfortable, but only slightly. Doctors usually apply an anesthetic cream to the skin and/or mix the dermal filler with lidocaine to reduce discomfort. The injection procedure itself usually takes less than 30 minutes, and patients can immediately return to their normal activities. The plumping effect is apparent immediately. There may be some minor, temporary bruising, redness, or itching at the injection sites. This is normal and these side effects will fade over the next couple of days.
How Long Does it Last?
Radiesse® may last for over a year before it needs to be touched up. Because Radiesse® stimulates the body to restore volume through collagen production, over time with repeated injections less filler may be needed at each touch-up. Restylane® usually lasts at least six months before additional filler is needed.
