Benefits of Otoplasty
Otoplasty is a medical procedure that involves modifying the ears surgically in order to correct large, protruding ears. During surgery, the doctor removes any extra skin and cartilage and literally “pins” the patient’s ears back to reshape them. Overall, otoplasty offers a number of key benefits, both physically and emotionally. Here are some of the main advantages the procedure can provide.

Corrects a number of problems
By far, the most common reason for getting otoplasty is to correct certain cosmetic issues from an aesthetic perspective. Cosmetic and reconstructive ear surgery is utilized in treating a variety of deformities, including protruding, folded, cupped, ‘cauliflower’, small, and very large ears.
It’s a relatively safe procedure
Ear surgery today is one of the safest kinds of surgeries across the entire medical field. In fact, adult patients receive only a mild anesthetic for pain during the operation. Nonetheless, it’s best for children to undergo anesthesia prior to starting the procedure. Very few cosmetic surgeries offer the diminished risk that otoplasty provides while giving great results overall.
Otoplasty renews self-confidence
Several individuals with irregularly shaped or damaged ears often experience social ridicule and discrimination, including getting teased and stared at every day. Younger children are frequent targets of cruel bullying and are taunted by other children because of the size and shape of their ears or earlobes. Studies illustrate that people with unusual-looking ears have considerably lower self-esteem and confidence. Fortunately, otoplasty can permanently correct their issues and renew their confidence level.
Makes people feel ‘normal’ again
Ear pinning and reshaping surgery provides several physical and psychological advantages for the recipients. Victims of bullying and teasing will no longer endure being mocked at, and can better focus on school or work. After surgery, their whole outlook on life suddenly changes now that they’re not constantly dealing with the burden of ridicule and humiliation. Once the bandages are removed, most patients instantly feel an emotional release and a true sense of normalcy.
How it works
The precise details of the surgery vary from person to person depending on the patient’s specific problem. In the case of protruding ears, the doctor makes tiny incisions directly behind the ears in order to remove, trim, and reshape the patient’s cartilage. Next, the ears are firmly secured in place using sutures so they’re affixed much closer to the head. Other shape issues or deformities can be addressed by removing cartilage and skin through small incisions near the front of the patient’s ear. Furthermore, the scars are virtually unnoticeable. The procedure for children usually takes around 2-3 hours and performed under general anesthesia.
Once the surgery is done, a protective bandage is then applied and remains there for 3-5 days. It’s best that patients wear a soft elastic headband throughout the night in order to reduce the risk of accidentally putting undue pressure on the ears while they’re healing.
Who makes a good candidate for otoplasty?
Healthy adults or children with misshapen, large, or protruding ears that are almost full-sized make ideal candidates for otoplasty. It’s important that the patient has a realistic expectation concerning the outcome of the procedure.
