All about Facial Implants: Chin & Cheek Augmentation
A facial implant is a surgical procedure that is done using a specially manufactured solid material that is compatible with human tissues to augment the physical structure of your face. The size and type of implant that is suitable for you requires an evaluation of your features, goals, and your doctor’s judgment.
Chin and cheek augmentations provide a greater harmony and balance to your face and facial features in order for you to feel more comfortable about the way you look. There are many types of implants available, and they are manufactured from different materials. These implants help to strengthen your jaw line or balance your chin or cheekbones with the rest of your face.
Chin implants help to increase the size and projection of a chin that is not proportional to the midface and forehead. A recessed or small chin seems to disappear into the neck of the individual of average weight instead of appearing distinctly as a facial feature.
Cheek implants are aimed at increasing the projection of the cheekbones. They also help to add volume to recessed or flat areas of the face.
Who is a Suitable Candidate for Facial Implants?
Both men and women can undergo facial implants. But not all men and women are candidates for this procedure. Facial implants are best suited for people who:
- Are physically healthy
- Have jaws and teeth that function properly
- Have a well-functioning immune system
- Are non-smokers
- Have flat cheekbone or early sagging cheeks
- Have a weak chin or those not balanced with the nose
- Have a positive outlook and a particular goal in mind to improve the facial contours
- Are well informed about the procedure including recovery and the risks involved
The Facial Implant Procedure
Facial implants are performed in our Novi office. The doctor will choose the right shape and size of implant that meets your cosmetic goals. These are often made from a soft, rubbery and flexible material that can be inserted through a small incision. They can be done from solid silicone or other materials that do not cause adverse reactions in the body. Most often the surgeon uses local anesthesia combined with a sedative, or in other cases general anesthesia is used.
A cheek implant often takes between 30 to 45 minutes. If it is done in conjunction with other procedures such as a facelift, eyelid surgery or a forehead lift, the implant is inserted through the incisions made for these methods. Otherwise, an incision is made in the upper lip or lower eyelid where a pocket is formed, and then the implant is inserted.
A chin implant procedure often takes about 30 minutes to one hour. The proper size and shape of the implant is inserted into a pocket made at the front of the jawbone. The incision to create this pocket is made inside the mouth along the lower lip or under the chin area.
After the surgery, the affected area is taped to reduce swelling and discomfort. The suture in the skin is usually removed after five to seven days. If the sutures were done intra-orally, they would dissolve slowly. Doctor Colton will give you instructions for the post-operative care, diet restriction and limitation of the activities you can do. You will experience some discomfort, and the area will swell for several days.
